Give Them A Second Chance (continued)

When we have room in our foster homes, we try to rescue as many of those adults as we can.  However, finding loving homes for adult cats is a daunting challenge that is faced not only by AHS, but by rescue groups and no-kill shelters across the country.

Since cats can live more than 20 years, there truly is no reason to say they’re “too old” to be adopted.  “Older cats can form strong bonds with their new families as well as kittens or young cats” Ms. Harris states.  “They can give just as much love and joy as kittens or adolescent cats. Give those precious animals a second chance.”

We wholeheartedly agree.  Please consider adopting an older cat.  They definitely DO know when they’ve been given a second chance.  And you won’t be disappointed.

Editor’s note:  Thanks to Ms. Emily Harris for her permission to quote her in this newsletter.
Her entire article, “Eager To Be Adopted” can be found in the August 2006 issue of CAT FANCY.

AHS Begins Microchipping Program

We are excited to announce that this past summer, we have intitated  our very own microchipping program!  Previously, only the animals that we rescued from the animal control center were  microchipped.  Now, all animals that come to our foster home network will be microchipped.
About the size of a grain of rice (see photo on left) the microchip is injected painlessly underneath the animal's skin between the shoulderblades, similar to how veterinarians give vaccinations.
Microchips are being used countrywide as a very reliable means of tracking pets that get lost or stolen - and proved to be a very valuable tool in reuniting pets with their owners in the chaotic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Rita in 2005.

Bark In The Park

Lafayette Animal Aid hosted the 8th annual “Bark In The Park” festival on Saturday October 28 at Girard Park.  Blessed with gorgeous weather throughout the day, the festival was well attended.  The dog contests proved to be quite popular.  Kudos to LAA!
