AHS and PetsMart In The News

On June 27 and 28, 2005, an anonymous person or persons dumped a total of 46 cats and kittens at the back doors of PetsMart in Lafayette, Louisiana.  The cats and kittens were crammed into large plastic bins that had been punctured with holes for minimal ventilation.  Both KATC TV station and the Advertiser newspaper featured the incident. AHS volunteers managed to take in many of these cats and kittens into already crowded foster homes, saving them from what would have been a certain death sentence at the animal control center.  Through generous donations from the Lafayette area community and PetsMart, many of these cats   have been given a clean medical bill of health, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered, and as of this printing, 12 of these felines have been adopted.

Many more adult cats are still available for adoption.  If you would like to adopt one of the “PetsMart Cats”, please call us at (337)-893-0377.

Pets Of Refugees/Evacuees from Hurricane Katrina Find Shelter At Blackham Coliseum

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette opened its CajunDome as a shelter to refugees and/or evacuees from Hurricane Katrina.  The nearby Blackham Coliseum was opened as a shelter for their pets. Acadiana area animal humane societies, including AHS, have been volunteering their services there in 4-hour shifts, providing food, water, crates, cages, kennels, advice, and other essentials as needed for the dogs and cats that escaped the storm with their human companions. One grateful lady told our own Barbara Borneman, that she'd lost everything and that she is so thankful that there are people to help with her dogs and cats. Her animals are all that she has left now,     and that she would never have left them behind.
